Gas Prices Affecting Participation

There is some speculation that families are opting out of competitive youth sports based around the travel requirement and the burden it puts on families. At the very least, teams and families are making a decision to stay closer to home - read this SI article. Now, it isn't just the fees or the cost of the soccer uniforms, tournaments and trainers, but now it is $4.00 gas. While the economic hardship may be too much, obviously, we don't want players missing opportunities over gas prices. Here are some common sense tips to decrease the amount of gas your collective team uses:
 
  • Organize early with the opposing coach and distribute directions to the team in advanc. This will help for planning if a family has multiple children.
  • Always pick a central meeting spot for the team, so cars can be filled and carpools established
  • Encourage parents to carpool to and from practice - provide everyone's address during the pre-season meeting
  • If traveling long distances to a tournament, consider renting a passenger cargo van. The overall costs should be less than traveling individually.
  • Check gas prices around town. Here's a good tool: Mapquest Gas Price Watcher
